Voto Latino Condemns Supreme Court’s Attack on Abortion Rights

In response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs, overturning Roe v. Wade and allowing the federal and state governments to enact draconian anti-abortion restrictions, Voto Latino President and CEO Maria Teresa Kumar issued the following statement:

“The Supreme Court’s ruling today means that choice is unambiguously on the ballot when we go to the polls in November. Abortion is healthcare, and like all healthcare it’s fundamentally private matter. The restrictive laws being put in place in states across the country—and that Republicans are itching to enact at a federal level—mean that women will die. This ruling endangers the rights of tens of millions of people, but we know that the burden will fall heaviest on individuals who are already marginalized, like people of color and poor people, while the most affluent among us will still have a better chance of getting the care they need. These attacks aren’t new, and the fight to let people control their own bodies won’t end here. This ruling, and this election, will be a matter of life or death.

“Voto Latino will do everything in its power to stand up for choice in this election and beyond. We’ll be making sure that voters know that they have the power to stand up to this decision at the ballot box. I for one refuse to leave my children with fewer rights than I had. Abortion is a human right. We can’t allow progress to be undone, and we’re going to fight every step of the way.”

According to polling released by Voto Latino this week, more than two-thirds of Latinos support access to abortion care in most or all cases (41% legal in all cases, 27% legal in most cases) and only 10% believe abortion should be illegal in all cases. Three-in-four Latinos were paying attention to reports of the leaked draft of the Dobbs opinion that indicated the conservative majority intended to overturn Roe v. Wade this year. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Latinos are more motivated to vote in November as a result of this opinion and 52% are much more motivated.
