Voto Latino Congratulates New House Democratic Leaders

Washington, D.C.–Voto Latino today shared its congratulations with the Democrats’ incoming House leadership team. House Democrats elected New York Representative Hakeem Jeffries to serve as Democratic Leader, Massachusetts Representative Katherine Clark to be the party’s whip, and California Representative Pete Aguilar to replace Jeffries as chair of the House Democratic Caucus. All were chosen by acclamation.

Voto Latino’s President and CEO, Maria Teresa Kumar, commended the new leadership team. “Congratulations to Representatives Jeffries, Clark, and Aguilar for winning the support of their colleagues and the opportunity to lead House Democrats in the next Congress. I’m thrilled that the Democratic leadership team looks more than ever like the face of the party’s most important supporters–including Latinos. I look forward to working with this new leadership team to build a more robust and inclusive democracy. Congress has important work to do, including moving on immigration reform to enshrine DACA into law, protecting individuals depending on Temporary Protected Status and supporting the essential workers who keep this country running.”

Kumar made special note of the elevation of Pete Aguilar. “This changing of the guard comes after November’s elections, in which Democrats were able to win with the help of Latino voters who turned out in force and cast their ballots overwhelmingly in favor of Democratic candidates. It is therefore fitting that Congressman Aguilar, a proud Mexican-American, is taking a place with the leadership team. Voto Latino stands ready to support Aguilar, and the rest of the House Democratic leadership, in their efforts to make Washington more responsive to the needs of the country’s rising generations.”
