Voto Latino Honors NBC News’ Tom Llamas with the 2025 “Our Voices” Groundbreakers Award
First Latino to Anchor a Prime-Time Weekday Broadcast Network Newscast Recognized for Outstanding Journalism
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Voto Latino Foundation, the leading civic engagement organization focused on informing and empowering a new generation of Latino voters, is proud to announce that award-winning NBC News journalist Tom Llamas will receive the 2025 Our Voices Groundbreakers Award.
As the first Latino to anchor a prime-time weekday network newscast, Llamas has consistently broken barriers throughout his 25-year journalism career. Currently the anchor of NBC News NOW’s Top Story with Tom Llamas and a senior national correspondent for NBC News, he has led the network’s breaking news and political coverage through some of the most critical moments in recent history—from Election Night 2024 to the migrant crisis, Hurricane Idalia, and the Baltimore bridge collapse. This summer, Llamas will make his debut as the anchor of NBC Nightly News and he will continue to anchor Top Story on NBC News NOW. Representing the next generation of journalists, Llamas has been integral to NOW’s success as the leading and fastest-growing streaming news network in the U.S.
“Tom Llamas exemplifies what it means to lead with integrity, impact, and purpose,” said María Teresa Kumar, President and Co-Founder of the Voto Latino Foundation. “At a time when truth and clarity are needed for audiences to make informed decisions, Tom uses his platform not just to inform—but to connect, represent, and reflect the richness and complexity of the American experience. He is a groundbreaker in every sense of the word.”
From in-depth interviews with world leaders to on-the-ground reporting in disaster zones, Llamas’ work has earned him multiple Emmy Awards, Edward R. Murrow Awards, and honors from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. His reporting spans global and domestic stories, including presidential politics, humanitarian crises, and major sporting events like the Olympics.
“Tom represents the best of NBC News and NBC Nightly News – world-class journalism that reaches audiences across all generations and backgrounds,” said Janelle Rodriguez, NBC News Executive Vice President, Programming. Rodriguez added, “Tom’s integrity and passion as a journalist has led him to meet this moment.”
A Miami native and the son of Cuban immigrants, Llamas began his broadcast career at a Telemundo local station and rose through the ranks at NBC and ABC News, becoming a trusted voice for millions of viewers. His journey reflects the very spirit of Our Voices: to honor those who reshape the national narrative through excellence, authenticity, and service.
For nearly two decades, Voto Latino has fought to ensure that Latino voices are being heard. Not only at the ballot box, but we also know how vital it is for diverse voices to be heard in newsrooms, on air, and behind the scenes. Tom Llamas will be celebrated at the Voto Latino Foundation’s annual Our Voices Gala on April 25, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
