Voto Latino Responds to College Board’s Capitulation to Gov. DeSantis’ Racist Attacks
After the College Board announced it would be revising its AP African American Studies curriculum following attacks from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Maria Teresa Kumar, President and CEO of Voto Latino, released the following statement in response:
“Ron DeSantis has made clear that he’s pinning his political future on efforts to censor education – not only in his state but across the country. It’s profoundly disappointing to see the College Board capitulate to his dishonest, racist attacks on its new AP African American Studies curriculum. DeSantis’ attempt to sabotage schools’ efforts to teach the totality of American history flies in the face of the fundamental principle of learning from the mistakes of our past to help prevent them from recurring. DeSantis is twisting and distorting our shared history to conform to his own political agenda, and its students who will ultimately pay the price.
“This toxic bigotry is exactly why we need to support bills like the African American History Act, introduced by Rep. Bowman and Sen. Booker. We owe it to generations past, present, and future to tell the full truth about U.S. history in our classrooms so we can grow from that past to form a more perfect union.”
