Voto Latino Responds to the U.S. Supreme Court’s Arguments on President Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness Program
In response to yesterday’s Supreme Court’s arguments on President Biden’s plan to cancel student loan debt for up to 43 million borrowers, Voto Latino issued the following statement:
“We continue to stand with the Biden Administration’s push to offset the crippling amount of student debt that’s only been exaggerated by the COVID pandemic. The current student debt crisis isn’t just wreaking havoc on the lives of individuals who are trapped by the debt they acquired trying to get a quality education–it’s becoming a challenge to the economic health of an entire generation.
“Make no mistake: there’s no reasonable argument that President Biden’s actions go beyond the clear language of the law. The fact that this case has made it to the Supreme Court is, itself, an indictment of how extreme and political our judicial system has become. The court’s sharp partisan tilt is bad for the law, ordinary people, and our country. The Republican Party’s relentless attacks on this program aren’t just cheap stunts to score political points–they have the potential to block financial relief to millions of current and former students.”
Voto Latino conducted a poll in battleground states leading up to the 2022 midterm elections and found that the majority of those surveyed support President Biden’s effort to cancel student debt. By a 70%-22% difference, Latinos – especially young Latinos – enthusiastically favored the plan to forgive student loan debt.
