Voto Latino Responds to Trump’s Announcement

In response to Donald Trump’s announcement that he is launching his 2024 presidential campaign, Voto Latino President and CEO María Teresa Kumar issued the following statement:

“In 2016 and 2020 Donald Trump ran his campaigns on a message of hate and violence that empowered white supremacists, anti-semitic and xenophobes – and, as the nation attempts to heal from his governing malpractice, he seeks to open fresh wounds to tear the nation apart. His time as the president represented a profound setback for all the progress our country has made towards living up to our stated values. He peddled policies of cruelty and divisiveness, and prided himself on separating children from their parents–many of whom have still not been reunited. He pushed authoritarian tactics in an effort to tear our country apart so he and his family could enrich themselves at the expense of the rest of us. After four years of his reckless, selfish leadership voters across the country repudiated him with their vote rejecting him and his agenda. We defeated Donald Trump in 2020, and if Republicans are foolish enough to nominate him we’ll do it again.

“In 2020, a coalition that included many conservatives in historically Republican strongholds like Arizona and Georgia rejected Donald Trump’s brand of politics. Last week, Americans once again chose democracy over Trump-endorsed election deniers who threatened to usurp our electoral process.

“Trump was one of the worst presidents in our country’s history, and the midterm elections made it clear that Americans don’t want what he is selling. Latino voters for the third straight election held Trumpism at bay in 2022, and they’ll be there to ensure Trump never gets near the White House if he runs in 2024.”
