Voto Latino Urges Swift Passage of Freedom to Vote Act

WASHINGTON – This morning, Senator Joe Manchin and fellow Senate Democrats put forward a revised version of federal voting rights legislation, retaining significant portions of the previous For the People Act, in hopes of passing new voter protections through Congress and sending a bill to President Joe Biden’s desk.

In response to the news, Voto Latino President and CEO Maria Teresa Kumar issued the following statement:

“News of Senator Manchin and fellow Senate Democrats’ agreement on a much-awaited federal voting rights bill is a golden opportunity for Congress to urgently pass legislation needed to thwart the ongoing assault on voting rights by state legislatures. It is imperative that Democrats come together around this compromise and uphold their promise to Americans to protect their fundamental right to vote, and immediately send this bill to President Biden’s desk to sign into law.

“There is no time to waste in passing the Freedom to Vote Act, instituting federal protections against the ongoing assault of these anti-democratic state laws. As Texas becomes the latest state to pass arcane measures that make it more difficult to vote, Republican lawmakers are not being coy in using whatever tools necessary to restrict access to the ballot box and handpick which part of the electorate gets to vote. It’s time for the federal government to step in and safeguard against this attack on voters and ensure every American has an equal opportunity to be heard in our elections.

If you’d be interested in speaking with Maria Teresa further about the Freedom to Vote Act, we’d be happy to arrange a call.
