Voto Latino’s Statement on President Joe Biden’s Executive Action to Provide Relief for Dreamers and Undocumented Immigrants

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, in response to President Joe Biden’s announcement of relief for undocumented people living in the U.S., Voto Latino Co-Founder and President María Teresa Kumar released the following statement:
“President Biden’s executive action to protect long-term undocumented spouses in the United States by streamlining pathways to lawful status is a fair and decent first step. It will keep families together, remove barriers to obtaining lawful status, and provide stability to our communities,” said Voto Latino Co-Founder and President Maria Teresa Kumar. This relief will calm the fears of the estimated 15,000 U.S. citizen children who have an undocumented parent, and who now live under the threat that a parent may be deported at any time.
“Undocumented immigrants make crucial social, political, and economic contributions to our nation. In 2019 alone, undocumented immigrants contributed an estimated $9.7 billion in federal and state taxes and over $11 billion in social security contributions. By taking steps to streamline pathways to lawful status for these hard-working people, President Biden is delivering for our communities and providing stability for these families and for American businesses. But the job is not done.
“For two decades, Voto Latino has been a leading voice for comprehensive immigration reform. We have fought relentlessly to expand pathways to citizenship for teachers, farmers, and caretakers who are undocumented people and have lived in America for years. And we asked the Biden-Harris administration to include a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and other long-standing undocumented residents.
“Voto Latino endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket for its significant accomplishments for the Latino community and because we expect the Administration to finish its work on issues that are important to Latino voters. On the one hand, we have an extreme former president who caused havoc, anxiety, and anguish in our communities in every corner of our nation. Trump promises to double down on his cruelty if elected again in November. He promises to go beyond Steven Miller’s family-separation policy by deploying our military to round-up undocumented-looking Americans. He also promises a cottage industry of detention centers across the nation where no one is safe – U.S. citizen or not. The sheer contrast of these policies to President Biden’s leadership and commitment to a thriving America can’t be understated. An American child sleeps free of anxiety tonight knowing that his mother is now protected because President Biden led and did not cower.
“Election decency is on the ballot. Today’s announcement has been a decade in the making and the result of Latinos showing up at the polls. But our work is not done. While this is a step in the right direction, there is much more that needs to be done. The alternative is devastation to our families. Voto Latino will continue registering, mobilizing, and informing Latino voters to empower our community and create a more robust and inclusive democracy and economy.”

“La acción ejecutiva del presidente Biden para proteger a los cónyuges indocumentados de ciudadanos estadounidenses y agilizar el camino para obtener un estatus legal, es un primer paso justo y decente. Mantendrá unidas a las familias, eliminará las barreras para tener un estatus legal y brindará estabilidad a nuestras comunidades”, dijo la Cofundadora y Presidenta de Voto Latino, María Teresa Kumar. Este alivio también calmará los temores de aproximadamente 15 mil niños ciudadanos estadounidenses, quienes tienen un padre indocumentado y que viven bajo la amenza de que uno de sus padres llegue a ser deportado en cualquier momento.
Los inmigrantes indocumentados hacen contribuciones sociales, políticas y económicas cruciales a nuestra nación. Solo en 2019, los inmigrantes indocumentados contribuyeron con un estimado de $9.7 mil millones en impuestos federales y estatales, y más de $11 mil millones en contribuciones a seguridad social. Al tomar medidas para agilizar una vía hacia la ciudadanía para estas personas trabajadoras, el presidente Biden está cumpliendo con nuestras comunidades y brindando estabilidad a estas familias y a las empresas estadounidenses. Voto Latino respaldó la candidatura de Biden-Harris por sus importantes logros para la comunidad latina y porque esperamos que la administración termine su trabajo en los temas que en verdad son importantes para los votantes latinos. Por un lado, tenemos un expresidente extremista que causó estragos, ansiedad y angustia en nuestras comunidades, en todos los rincones de nuestra nación. Trump ha prometido redoblar su crueldad si es elegido nuevamente en noviembre. Y promete ir más allá de la política de separación de familias de Steven Miller y desplegar a nuestro ejército para detener a los estadounidenses que parecen indocumentados. También promete una industria de centros de detención en todo el país donde nadie estará seguro, sea ciudadano estadounidense o no. El contraste entre estas políticas y el liderazgo del presidente Biden y su compromiso con una América próspera no se puede subestimar. Un niño estadounidense dormirá tranquilo y sin ansiedad esta noche, sabiendo que su madre ahora está protegida, porque el presidente Biden lideró y no se acobardó.
La decencia de las elecciones está en la boleta electoral. El anuncio de hoy se ha estado gestando durante una década y es el resultado de la presencia de los latinos en las urnas. Pero nuestro trabajo no ha terminado. Si bien este es un paso en la dirección correcta, hay mucho más por hacer. La alternativa es la devastación para nuestras familias. Voto Latino continuará registrando, movilizando e informando a los votantes latinos para empoderar a nuestra comunidad y crear una democracia y una economía más sólidas e inclusivas”.
